We are, however, providing you with some small glimpses into the features that Window-Eyes 5.5 Beta 1 will contain. We will answer all questions at that time. Please be patient; you will be rewarded. If you're subscribed to the GW Micro podcast feed, you'll automatically receive this Guess What in mp3 format. If you want to download the MP3, read this article online, or view more Guess What articles (when they are released), please visit www.gwmicro.com/beta. Enjoy! -- Welcome to GW Micro's "Guess What?" series, an introductory look at the upcoming release of Window-Eyes 5.5 Beta 1. We'll be covering a new feature in Window-Eyes 5.5 Beta 1 every day until the release of 5.5 Beta 1, so stop by our web site (www.gwmicro.com/beta) daily to make sure you don't miss any of the exciting new features. Today, we'll be covering Window-Eyes 5.5 Beta 1 and Mozilla Firefox. Window-Eyes is the first screen reader to fully support Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox (commonly known as Firefox) is a free, open source, web browser, developed by the Mozilla Foundation and hundreds of volunteers. Some of the major features that make Firefox an attractive alternative web browser are: 1) Popup Blocking - A built in popup blocker keeps unwanted windows from being displayed 2) Tabbed Browsing - Open several pages in a single window. You can also load new links in the background so they're ready to be viewed when you're ready to read them. 3) Privacy and Security - No ActiveX controls are loaded, and you can choose to "sanitize" Firefox on either startup or shutdown. 4) Smarter Search - By default, Google search is built into the Firefox toolbar, allowing you quick access to the most popular search engine. The search bar can, however, be configured to use almost any search engine. 5) Smart Keywords - Use a single keyword in place of an entire bookmarked URL. For example, bookmark http://www.gwmicro.com, give it a keyword of gw, and when you type gw in the address bar, and press ENTER, Firefox will load the GW Micro web page. 6) Live Bookmarks - RSS integration lets you view news and headlines from your favorite sites. For more information on all Firefox features, visit the Mozilla Firefox web page: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of GW Micro, and IBM, an accessible DHTML (Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language) standard is now a reality. The new accessible DHTML standard allows authors to develop widgets (such as tree views, menu bars, slider bars, progress bars, tab controls, and spreadsheets) that are accessible to screen readers like Window-Eyes. For more information on accessible DHTML, visit the Accessible DHTML Technology Preview page at http://www.mozilla.org/access/dhtml/. With Window-Eyes 5.5 Beta 1, Firefox will be extremely accessible. Let's take a listen I already have Firefox on my screen, and Window-Eyes is already running. I can press CTRL-L to enter in a URL. Let's go to www.gwmicro.com. Window-Eyes told us information about the webpage, such as the number of links. Firefox allows you to open separate tabs within the browser. There is no need to use ALT-TAB to navigate through the Windows. Instead, you can use CTRL-T to open a new tab. You are automatically put in to the address bar where you can type the new URL that you want to go to. I'm going to open a new tab, and go to www.google.com. Again, Window-Eyes told us information about this webpage. Now, I can switch between tabs with CTRL-PAGE UP and CTRL-PAGE DOWN. Since we changed pages, Window-Eyes told us information about the webpage of the specific tab that we are on. You can even use CTRL-1 through 9 to navigate between tabs. Let's open another tab with CTRL-T. This time, we will go to www.gwmicro.com/braillesense. Just as before, Window-Eyes told us information about the webpage. We can press CTRL-1 to go back to our first tab, which was www.gwmicro.com. We can press CTRL-W or CTRL-F4 to close one tab at a time. Let's try closing two of our three tabs. The tab closes and Window-Eyes tells us information about where we were in our previous tab. Another great feature of using Window-Eyes with Firefox is the INS-TAB command. Just like with Internet Explorer, you can use the INS-TAB to list the links, frames, tables, headings, lists, anchors, and forms. Let's press INS-TAB to bring up a list of the available links. Window-Eyes told us the name of the first link, and how many links there are. I could press ALT-P to put the links in alphabetical order or ALT-W to put them in the order that they appear on the web page. But, I'm just going to type in "Braille Sense F," so I can get to the "Braille Sense FAQ" link quickly. Window-eyes said the name of the link. Now, I can press ENTER to activate the link. Window-Eyes started to read us information about the webpage. The link has been activated, but let's open a very large web page to demonstrate to you just how fast Firefox is. We'll press CTRL-L first to enter a new link. We were told the link we are currently on. Now, let's go to www.empowermentzone.com, which is very large web page. Wow, that was fast. Window-Eyes opened the webpage, and told us there were 1,714 links. Let's open the links list with INS-TAB to see how fast Window-Eyes can open a large web page. Again, with the INS-TAB command, Window-Eyes told us the name of the first link, and how many links there were. Unbelievable! That was extremely fast. Over 800 links were loaded in just a few seconds. Just think of what we'll show you tomorrow. We hope today's "Guess What?" has given you a glimpse into the power of Window-Eyes 5.5 Beta 1, and its innovative new support for Mozilla Firefox. Stay tuned for tomorrow's "Guess What?" to learn more about Window-Eyes 5.5 Beta 1. Jeremy Curry GW Micro, Inc. "The voice of vision."
