escaping the clutch of linemen…physical wrap tackler…always ball searching
to rip the ball
out in coverage…senior captain…made the defensive calls and aligned the
personnel…the Texas A&M coaches singled him out as the off-field leader who
guided his
teammates through quarantine…spent time at all three linebacker spots…his
production got better and better, recording 10-plus tackles in six of the
10 games as a
senior…was a mainstay on special teams coverages (557 career snaps).
WEAKNESSES: Doesn’t have the frame or base to be a thumper and will go in
reverse at times when attacking the hole…his finishing strength as a
tackler can be
improved to avoid the slide off misses…can be controlled at the line of
scrimmage when he tries to turn his body instead of using his hands…doesn’t
play sure of
himself in coverage…struggles to balance his eyes and anticipate route
combinations in his drops…his pattern awareness and depth must improve (he
allowed 17
catches for 247 yards and three touchdowns in 2020).
SUMMARY: A four-year starter at Texas A&M, Johnson was the weakside
linebacker in defensive coordinator Mike Elko’s 4-2-5 base scheme. After
moving inside, he
had team highs of 77 tackles as a junior and 86 as a senior and was
responsible for several impact-level plays, including two defensive
touchdowns and the forced
fumble that swung the game for Texas A&M’s win over Florida. An aggressive,
alert defender, Johnson has the read-and-react skills and pursuit range to
track down
the football. While he moves well in space, his coverage athleticism is
better than his instincts. Overall, Johnson needs to improve his feel in
coverage and
consistency as a gap-filler, but he plays fast and fierce with the
character that could cement a roster spot in the NFL.

The Steelers pick Buddy Johnson, ILB, Texas A&M. Physical run stuffer, two

tackle, the Aggies had the same starting tackle tandem in every game the
last three seasons and the Texas A&M coaches believe Moore’s improvements
in 2020
make him the best pro prospect among their senior offensive linemen.
Moore has adequate foot quickness in his setup to mirror rushers off the
edge and push them
wide of the pocket. While he flashes strength in the run game, he can be
rocked on his heels in pass pro and needs to improve his base strength.
Overall, Moore
needs to be more forceful with his hands to avoid leaning on blocks, but
he moves well with body control and is an ascending talent to develop into
a reliable NFL

They picked Dan Moore, T, Texas A&M - Ascending player, but strictly
backup material. Does not play with power at all but has decent body
control. Carried round six grades. I expected as much, really, there really
isn’t much out there, yet they still have urgent needs to fill and needed
to force a pick at OT. Bad draft management, imo.
