I don't disagree with you but how do sensible people reconcile what you're
saying here with the "he needs to win playoff games! he's only a winning but
not championship coach! he has lost control of the team!" taglines?

I gotta say, this, for all of Rooney and Tomlin's statements to the contrary,
is a rebuilding/transition year. And to still be talking about playoffs with
two weeks left? Way to go Tomlin. I'm seriously excited to see what Khan does
in the off season.

And, should they indeed get all the breaks they need, the Steelers will be in
either Kansas City again or in Buffalo. There actually 'is' a scenario where
they could play the Bengals, but don't count on it. KC would have to lose to
both the Broncos (at home, no less) and at the Raiders.

Yep, so for this week, in order to stay alive going into Week 18:
Patriots beat Dolphins (possible, with NE at home, still alive as well, plus
the possibility that Tua doesn't play)
Seahawks beat Jets (also possible, with SEA at home and still alive as well.
However, with Mike White at QB instead of Zach Taylor, that gives the Jets a
better chance).
We need those two outcomes in order for the SNF game to matter. Which is why
I'm surprised the NFL flexed it - I would have guessed Mia-NE would get the
call seeing as no matter what, those teams don't need help to make the playoffs.
Unless the league is going to guarantee it matters? ;)

Yes. There is only one scenario left. Pats and Jets beat Dolphins, Bills beat
Pats, Seahawks beat Jets. Steelers beat Ravens and Browns.

After this week, with one spot left, the math is pretty simple:
1. We need to be the only team that gets to 9-8.
That's it. We lose every tiebreaker, so that's the math (ignoring ties).

Or the Steelers and Dolphins could win out and the Chargers lose out. I believe
that would give everyone who didn't win a division 9 losses except the
Steelers, Dolphins, and Ravens. Or the Chargers and Dolphins both lose out and
either the Patriots lose to the Bills or the Jets lose to Seattle (or both, in
which case the Steelers get the sixth seed). Oh, and your scenario doesn't
need anything from the Titans because they play the Jaguars in week 18 and the
loser of that game will have 9 losses.
The key is there can only be at most one other team with 8 losses, because they
all hold the tiebreaker over the Steelers.

From what I can gather, in order for them to make the playoffs, the following
needs to happen:
* The Steelers need to win out.
* The Dolphins need to lose to the Jets and the Patriots.
* The Patriots need to lose to the Bills.
* The Jets need to lose to Seattle.
* The Titans need to lose one game (either Cowboys or Jax).

For those eternal optimists who are still holding out hopes for the 7th seed,
here's the rooting interests for this weekend.
Steelers over Raiders
Bengals over Patriots
Packers over Dolphins
If any of those 3 don't happen, the Steelers are eliminated.
In the "nice to have" category, hope the Texans upset the reeling Titans.
Too many other things have to go their way after this, so in the event we're
still ticking after this week, we can look at it again.
To all my Steelers brothers and sisters out there, I wish you a happy, healthy,
joyous holiday!
