Hi Ronan and Paul, Thanks for your responses. Ronan, I can have someone take a look with VO off, just in case it's a VO issue. Regarding your earlier question, I can’t advise you, but have heard that updating older iPhones, can cause them to run a little sluggishly. Paul, The battery was completely flat, but I'd no problem in charging it. It reported a 100% charge. Prior to getting the iPhone 5C last December, I noticed gestures were becoming unreliable. I assumed it was a problem with the digitiser, but it may be a battery matter. It's about 5 years old, so the battery is probably a little tired at this stage! I didn’t reset it for fear of losing data. In the IPhone if you'll notice however not all the battery of your IPhone becomes depleted and there is still just enough power in it for to keep the clock synchronised till you recharge it. However in this case it looks like your IPhone battery has gone bad and needs replacing. When you get a new one and power up correctly and once the clock detects a network it will reset itself.
