Hi Eamon, Sounds like a similar issue to when the CMOS battery goes on a laptop or PC, the date not working correctly indicates that the battery which is different than the normal battery has gone bad. In the IPhone if you'll notice however not all the battery of your IPhone becomes depleted and there is still just enough power in it for to keep the clock synchronised till you recharge it. However in this case it looks like your IPhone battery has gone bad and needs replacing. When you get a new one and power up correctly and once the clock detects a network it will reset itself.
