Thanks for that.

As I use the phone very little at present, I just pay as I go,  topping up
occasionally.

Roming is currently off.

Eamonn,  you need to go into settings and turn on the data and roming
thingy in there.  I mightn't even be calling it its proper title at the
moment but this option is more than lightly turned off.  I just have come
back from the states myself and I didn't use my phone for that purpose as
there was a mix up with the plan I am currently on with vodafone but I did
make calls and also my clock automatically changed over to the timezone I
was in also for me.  Just make sure that the plan that you are on with your
provider allows for roming at no extra costs when you are out of the
country.
