Eamon, Yes as far as I know you should register for roaming to be on the
safe side as unless you check your account status and you haven't accepted a roaming offer in the past you may not be covered for the charges. The network you are with in Ireland will have connected with networks in Italy and charges differ in regard to calls within that country and in respect of your usual network. as a vodafone pay
as you go customer I took up the "passport " option.

Do you need to register for roming, or do you automatically connect to
another network upon arrival in a different country, in my case, Italy.

I haven't  yet been abroad with my iPhone, so am not quite sure what to
expect!
