Hi Darragh, Thanks for both emails. The 200GB external drive is permanently connected, and, so far as I remember, was on when I went into defrag. I have Service Pack 2 installed. also, the temporary files are not stored on my external drive, so, as you say, there may be no need to defrag. I think I have the drive about 2 years. I'll take another look, as I may have missed something obvious. cheers, Eamonn "Darragh" <lists@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx 21/02/2007 13:31 Please respond to vicsireland To: <vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> cc: Subject: [vicsireland] Re: disk clean up and defragmenter question by the way, I should probably note that unless you've specified that your computer should use your external hard drive for storing temporary files, you shouldn't need to do a system clean up on it. a defragment might be necessary after a long long long time but I've never done one and I have my 350GB usb drive for ages now, copying files on and off almost every day. sorry again for the false information. Serves me right for jumping to conclusions. -------- Original Message -------- > From: eoconnor@xxxxxxx > Sent: 21 February 2007 12:34 > To: vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > Subject: [vicsireland] Re: disk clean up and defragmenter question > > Hi Darragh, > > thanks for that - I love straightforward answers! > > Are there programs available to clean up and defrag removable drives - > preferably freeware? > > It's not a problem at present, as I have a fair amount of space. > > Regards, > > Eamonn > > > > > > > "Darragh" <lists@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > Sent by: vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > 21/02/2007 12:21 > Please respond to vicsireland > > To: <vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> > cc: > Subject: [vicsireland] Re: disk clean up and defragmenter > question > > No. It shouldn't really recognise these as their removable storage. > > > > -------- Original Message -------- > > From: eoconnor@xxxxxxx > > Sent: 21 February 2007 12:13 > > To: vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > > Subject: [vicsireland] disk clean up and defragmenter question > > > > Hi folks, > > > > Will Windows XP disk clean up and disk defragmenter, recognise external > > USB hard drives? > > > > Having recently installed a few programs, I cleaned and defragmented my > > two internal hard drives.
