Hi Darragh,

Thanks for both emails.

The 200GB external drive  is permanently connected, and, so far as I 
remember,  was  on  when I went into defrag.

I have Service Pack 2 installed.

also, the temporary files are not stored on my external drive, so, as you 
say, there may be no need to defrag.  I think I have the drive about 2 
years. 

I'll take another look, as I may have missed something obvious.

by the way,
I should probably note that unless you've specified that your computer 
should use your external hard drive for storing temporary files, you 
shouldn't need to do a system clean up on it.  a defragment might be 
necessary after a long long long time but I've never done one and I have 
my 350GB usb drive for ages now, copying files on and off almost every 
day.

sorry again for the false information.  Serves me right for jumping to 
conclusions.
