That was the RTÉ Player XL version, developed by a University of Limerick
student when RTÉ let her deal with the inaccessibility issues as they
existed at that time. Nothing much to do with the RTÉ Player on iOS or on
other smart devices. It worked well (on computers) for a few years, but,
over time, has become less effective at interacting with the main player
interface. It was mainly TV; but you could use it to play RTÉ radio stations
also.
Because the computer version apparently continues to use Flash content, I
can't get it to work on Windows 7 and IE any more, and Google Chrome decided
to unsupport Flash a few years ago. So I've no luck with that.
The state of iOS accessibility as it was enjoyed before, did not come about
overnight. It was developed through tinkering around with the previous iOS
version(s) over the duration of a few yearsz.
How many of you use it for watching programmes live? It is not unusable with
VoiceOver; but different, and rather less accessibole. Furthermore, yes
there are unlabelled or 'quaintly labelled' buttons, like, Icon Button
White, Icon Button Grey, Icon Button Green. The buttons do something, but
they do need to be labelled with more meaningful text than what we're
presented with through VoiceOver. (I have written to them, before Christmas.
My reply to playerfeedback@xxxxxx was being sent to the Accessibility
personnel. I asked them to actually use the player on an iPhone, and enable
VoiceOver and LISTEN to what it says as they navigate the Player screen
using VoiceOver.)
Now with watching live, having the ads there is handy since, without them,
there was nothing on the Player for a few minutes, and it would (or it might
not) come back when the ad break was finished.
Now the verbiage, of which there is plenty, and screen clutter with passages
of programme description as if 'twas a mini-RTÉ Guide. Instead of 'Live', we
have 'On Now'. The handy tabs at the bottom, all gone. (Instead of RTÉ Jnr,
we have, 'kids'. It's as if somebody trashed the app as it was formerly, and
went back to the drawing board.) (RTÉ themselves referred to it as a
'relaunch'.) Oh dear. It was already several years old, for a 'relaunch'? I
guess these things ... take a ... red tape ... while. There has been a minor
update since Christmas. But things are the basically the same (I think) as
they were with the so-called re-launch version.

Hi folks,
I rarely use the player, so have no real experience as to its accessibility.
However, I have a memory in the back of my mind, that a few years ago,
someone was hired specifically to revamp the player, so it would be
accessible. Having said that though, I'm not sure if it was the radio or tv
player.
Perhaps it rings a bell with some others on the list?

This is bad news Dave and thanks for pointing this out. It's terribe to see
an accessible service degrading because nobody is paying attention. I
suggest you contact the RTE Accessibility Officer and the RTE Player team.
The Accessibility Officer used to be Isabel Charleton but she has retired so
I'm trying to find out who has replaced her in that role. When I find out I
will talk to them myself and also give you their contact details.
The Player team can be contacted by emailing playerfeedback@xxxxxx.
On the RTE website under Access to RTÉ's Services for People with
Disabilities it says Section 26 (1) of the Disabilities Act 2005 requires a
public body to provide access to its services to people with disabilities
where practical and appropriate. If a member of the public feels that RTÉ in
its provision of services discriminates against a person with a disability a
complaint may be made to complaints@xxxxxx.
We need to let them know that this isn't acceptable.

Hi All, and happy new year.
A couple of weeks ago there was a major update and re-design to the RTE
Player on iPhone and iPad.
Sadly, the app has gone backwards in terms of accessibility in this update.
Previously, the app was pretty much perfect in my opinion, but the new one
has unlabelled buttons dotted around the place, and unclear elements, and
the video player, playback controls etc, is now inaccessible.
This is obviously very disappointing. We pay the license fee just like
everyone else, so should expect the same service.
This is even worse when something that was accessible takes retrograde
steps.
As well as being morally problematic, I wonder do RTE, as public broadcaster
and license fee recipients, have a legal obligation here?
It's also a pour user interface in general in my opinion. But I guess that's
a different matter ☺️
