Priorities, man! Can't do everything all at once.
On the other hand, I could see a file dialog, not the standard one, but a
"Preview dialog" that shows the files, and a click on the filename loads it,
plays a short scale with it, and you can either stop it or let it be loaded.
I agree that it is tedious to load a file, try it using the virtual
keyboard, and then go to the next file via the Instruments dialog.
But a quick preview could take a lot of work and risk breaking something,
so it's worth considering it with care.

Ok, thanks, I see yoshimi does not want to improve in cool ways making
things easier and more fun for the user. First step is usually finding
interesting sounds, and with this feature you could easily step over all
your sounds on your harddrive, before starting playing on crappy or not so
fitting sounds to your current mood or goal. I clicked so often on load
instrument, click to one of my favourite directory, just to load a new
sound. Ok, yoshimi can continue using this old style, super slow,
unnecessarily complicated method. Best regards

Yes, but it confuses new users and I'd like to get rid of it completely.
If they're running with default settings they are liable to think a big
'?'
means something is wrong, and if they see the short bit of uncompressed
files
they want to know if *that* means it went wrong somehow.
