The actual meat is the repository content. Which is protected by the GPL.
We can be glad (again) that the GPL is not "free" in the sense of don't care,
but really enforces our rights.
Yet all the other nice stuff provided by GitHub, like community tools, and
distribution bandwidth, is essentially something that costs money. And this
whole story just reminds us, that these goods are not a donation or gift to
the open source community, but rather are used for producing data and social
graphs, which are monetised by the big companies.
So we should ask ourselves, what we actually want and need, and what price
would be acceptable for that. Some projects raise funds and run their own
servers. Which of course costs some extra effort and time. Others just use
sourceforge or Github for distribution and haver their actual website elsewhere.
