For those that don't know...
Originally Cal hosted Yoshimi on his own personal server, but (about 6
months) later transfered it to Sourceforge, as he said at the time "With some
reluctance". I suspect his reasoning was that with Yoshimi having quickly
obtained considerable traction and support he didn't want it to be easily lost
- well knowing his time was short.
However, when we lost him, Jeremy had to put in a fair bit of effort to get
Sourceforge to give him admin rights. It is fortunate for us that he did.
With this as a background, when I got involved I fairly soon gave several other
people admin rights as further insurance.
When we started to have that series of outages at Sourceforge I then opened the
GitHub mirror. The GitHub people to agreed to Yoshimi being a public open
source repository. This does two things. There are no fees, and it isn't
attached to me personally. Once again, I gave the same few people admin rights.
Since then GitHub has become the main repository, and Sourceforge the mirror.
One of the concerns I have with Microsoft possibly taking over is their well
know lock-in policy and migrating everything to regular licence payments. My
belief is that they would quietly make a series of tiny changes that makes it
difficult to migrate away, and then apply charges.
They have a new, dangerous, modus operandi. It's now 4 Es.

Now, I couldn't afford to take on such a cost. Nor could I afford to run my own
server - apart from which, such action would remove much of Yoshimi's
visibility, and the safety built in.
Yes, git itself is safe but it would be much harder to keep everyone
synchonised.
Yes we still have Sourceforge to fall back on but it's not so well managed and
we should have the extra insurance anyway.
