Hi Will,
To be shamelessly honest ;), I HATE the splash screen, with that curly
staff system and coloured notes it looks like it's made for a children's
ear-training app, IMHO...
Oh dear.
I never thought of that, and can certainly see your point.
I don't know that whole yoshimi and flaming lips story, but I've made
photos in Teotihuacan when I was there in 1996/7.
I'm no graphics designer, but there's an idea I had since a while:
The pink robot part of the splash screen pretty much reminds me of the
numerous reliefs of the rain-god Tlaloc there, see
http://riccardobudini.photoshelter.com/image/I0000Jm.8Z4xon3I for example...
If that's an idea to follow, I can supply scans of the pics I have (I
hope I haven't lost the scans I've made once long ago), if you can't
find CC'd photographs

That's certainly interesting.
One thing I'm fairly convinced of is that our actual desktop icon should never
change - as a matter of 'brand' recognition, but we can be far more flexible
with the splash screen.
Maybe a large rain god could be towering over a very scared and diminished
robot, although I've no idea what text could go with it.
Hmmm, just looked this up on the 'net. There are a lot of confusingly different
images there and none like the one you showed :(
Hmm I'm a bit confused now as well :)
I did a quick google search on "Tlaloc Teotihuacan" and a few of the
image results showed exactly the reliefs i was referring to. Your
failing may have to do with the fact that the later Aztecs also
worshipped Tlaloc but depicted him pretty differently, much rounder in
appearance, but all the key elements are there, the huge eyeballs, the
row of squares that somewhat resembles the pink robot's teeth, the
actual 2 mighty sabre teeth below, the earholes (both the latter don't
translate to the robot image well, though)
I looked at the sources to find the splash screen images and icons, and
got pretty confused, as src/Splash/splash_screen.svg shows something
very different from what i see when launching yoshimi. And in fact it
shows something I like much better as a splash screen, except the robot
icon which looks different... But it seems this svg never got converted
to the hex data that gets included in main.cc.
Also I found desktop/yoshimi_alt.svg which is yet another pink robot
icon, this time in a sort of "angry birds" comic style.
My initial idea would have been to replace the robot face icon by some
sort of vectorized and "pinkified" variant of the Tlaloc relief I
referred to. Just because the similarity struck me, I didn't think much
further. From all I know it would be hard to convert a photo to a decent
looking clean svg icon. And you say you're sold to the desktop icon as
it is now.
I'd be happy if the current splash svg for example could be updated to
show the "canonical" robot icon, and converted to SplashPngHex by
export_splash.sh. I don't know who worked on it but to me the svg splas
looks much more serious yet graphically pleasing.
Just my 2 centavos :)
