Today at work I ran that example switch code on an older 32bit machine running
at 1.6G. This really showed up the difference.
The 'packed' version ran pretty consistently at 10 seconds.
The 'sparse' one started out slightly slower, but when reading the last case
entry was approaching twice as long at 18 seconds.
