I fired it up now that I'm home. Midi Layer is quite the extraordinary
piece of work!, and I don't know anything that comes close. I use
mididings to do its job in my Box of No Return, but it's the very diametric
opposite of GUI, nowhere near as easy to use and adapt.
Unfortunately, Midi Layer does ALSA MIDI, and does not do JACK MIDI. This
means that in order to use it with a large proportion of Linux audio tools,
you'll have to have a2jmidid running too, which will get everything you
need to show up where you need it. And that does add latency. Perhaps a
really good developer out there, will contribute or fork it, to support
JACK :-)

My sequencer of choice is Rosegarden and both this and Qtractor have no
problem
finding Yoshimi. I've not really tried anything else.
