Hi all,
I had a similar problem in the past and found the manual a bit confusing
at first. If it at all helps I came up with the following approach.
Use System State as a means of setting the defaults of Yoshimi thinking
of this as the synth hardware settings.
Such that you get Yoshimi up and running, configure it fully, save those
settings, and restart it just to make sure they stick. You aren't done
yet though because you want the MIDI config and System Effects saved as
well. That requires a default system state that contains them. To do
that first configure all your system level effects such as Chorus or
Reverb. Then configure the MIDI controls and test them out. Once done
save the System State using the menu option. Name the file as desired
and I recommend using a date stamp in there for future reference. Once
saved, restart Yoshimi and load that state. Then test the MIDI controls.
You should be able to use them. Finally, set Yoshimi to load this state
by default using the configuration. In that way it will load the desired
system state with the MIDI CCs in place. This works wonderfully for my
setup.
Use Patch Sets as as a means to save instrument arrangements for a given
performance thinking of this as synth software settings.
Setup your instrument arrangement by selecting the patches you want with
the settings you desire. Save these as a Patch Set with a name based on
the song and date stamp. In this way you don't have to overwrite your
System settings and you can save a patch set per performance or
composition without affecting your controller settings or effects that
are available. This will make it far easier to switch between songs
quickly later and compare versions of a track over time.
