Tristram - Under volume mixer, there is only up and down sliders for volume, nothing for left right balance; if I go in to playback devices, what I see is confusing, there is a long list, mostly it seems of speakers, after which for some, it says "working", but I can't tell which out of the list of speakers, is the pair I am using on this Vista machine. I need more help from those more in the know than me regarding this -

"The sound is working fine on my Vista laptop, when heard through the built-in speakers, but when I plug headphones in [and I prefer to work this way] the playback is about 80 percent over to the left channel. " Have you chcked the balance controls in the volume panel of your Windows? Some laptops o even headphones can have very poor connectors. Try a differen set of heaphones sometimes it is the headphone jack that does not properly connect which not especially uncommon with the mini-jack variety of connection. Regards.
