Hi Catherine: Can't promise to be absolutely accurate with all answers but as far as I understand it... 1. What is pinging in the blogging context? This relates to when other people link to your post from their own blogs, you can opt for an alert whenever this happens. 2. slug - no idea but again it's vaguely releated to the same area, it's about tracking posts and being able to link directly back to them. 3. categories. You can create as many categories as ou like, each time you create a category it is added to your list of categories. When you create a post you can choose from your list of available categories or if you don't have an appropriate one you can add a new one. You add a new category by typing it in to the category box and clicking the add button. To existing categories are accompanied by checkboxes so using jfw you can use the x key to jump between your existing categories and use the spacebar to select appropriate ones. When you add a new category it is automaticly selected. You can also set which category is selected by default. If you don't set this it will default to a category called 'uncategorised'. My understanding is that categories are the different topicss available and that tagging is simply the process of sellecting the appropriate categories. 4. global dashboard contains some different options but only really has value if you have more than one blog, so for example in global dashboard you would have links to the dashboards for each blog you manage. 5. I make heavy use of jfw quick nav key, so e to move between edit boxes for title and main text. B to get to buttons, and x to move between categoires that way you don't really need to spend much time keying through the interface. For entering text there are two different views avalable the code view and the other vieew, can't remember it's name at present. One is like a simple text editor you type in all code to format your entry to enter html you surround it with a code tag so for a link you would type lessthan code greater than (with no spaces) then your anchor ref code and then following the closing greaterthan of your link type lessthan cde greaterthan. Using the visual layout you can click the various buttons above the editable area and the relevant codes are put in for you, you then just add your text however this uses colour to suggest where you enter text so without vision requires a lot of reviewing of the ocdes and assumes you know your html anyway so is much slower and generally unpleasant. The editor sometimes behaves strangely when trying to edit text so for longer posts I tend to write the text in another application and then just copy and post in the wordpress. There are blogg posting applications that let you post to your blog directly from the desk top application but I haven't yet found a good jaws friendly one, not that I've tried more than a couple. You can however do this n word 2007 although I've only tried it once without much success. Must give it another go. I'd be glad if anyone can answer any of them. 1. What is pinging in the blogging context? 2. What's a slug? I get asked when I want to make a post for the slug and there's an edit box. 3. I understand there's a difference between categories and tagging, and different people seem to have different opinions as to what that is. My question is do you just make up the categories/tags and type them in the edit box every time you make a post? Is there a list of categories you can choose from? If you use a category once, can you choose it from a list next time so you don't have to remember exactly what you called that category last time? 4. At wordpress there are two links for dashboards - one is called my dashboard, which seems to be the place to go to do anything you might want to connected with posting, and the other is called global dashboard - what is global dashboard for? 5. Any tips on using wordpress greatly appreciated.
