Why on earth would anyone want the I-phone. Many users demand a physical keypad. Do what I have just done and get a N97 Mini and you have a touch screen phone with a physical querty keypad and you can also text using the onscreen numeric keypad. Now thats what I call the best of both worlds. Talks works well when using the keypad to navogate and when you press a number on the keypad or onscreen with your finger then Talks will speak the number or letter. I can listen to my music and write and read text messages along with using the calender and contacts plus writing notes and I can use other third party apps. The phone has a 3.5m audio jack so I don't have to worry about buying headphone adaptors. I'm getting quicker with this phone by the day and don't regret the purchase. I can't wait to put Mobile Speak on this phone as the new version will support the touch screen fully. I just have to wait a month. At the moment I have to look at the screen if I want to press the options key 1 and key2 plus the end call key.

Why can't you use a bluetooth keyboard? I'm aware of people that do, and there are keyboards out there claiming to work with the iphone. So I'd say that for the iphone we have voice, touch screen, bluetooth keyboard and I couldn't tell you about the braille display although I'll be surprised if you can't use one since Apple seems to have put so much in to accessibility, but I did do a quick google and couldn't find anything.

I certainly wouldn't claim they are perfect, and just like any device, they all have their pros and cons.

Hi Peter.

OK, so your happy to dictate personal or confidential text messages and emails are you? I used to use Vlingo on my Nokia phone, but apart from the fact that it isn't compatible with my new handset the N86, I'm beginning to wonder whether voice dictation is always the best way to input information. At least with the Nokia phones, you have a variety of ways of inputting texts, you have the number pad, an external keyboard, a Braille display if you use one and of course your voice. With the IFone, because the Bluetooth implementation is so bad, a keyboard can't be used so the only options are the on screen keyboard and your voice. Since I'd never want to rely totally on my voice especially if I wanted to write something highly personal to someone, its not a viable option for me.

All the best, Ibrahim.

I'd disagree and say it's a very good interface for the blind. The only downfall is the typing but now that apps such as dragon dictate are around that problem is solved. I can work much quicker using the iphone/ipod gestures then I ever could with Talks, having to try and move around a screen and navigate menus.

Hi Hussein,

You seem to make some assumptions here.

I am totally blind and I use the iPod touch. It is not an efficient
interface for the blind, but totally usable, and pretty well accessible.
But Apple have designed voiceover so that it can be used by totals.

It's a good music player, but I wouldn't want an iPhone for example, as for
productivity it really sucks big time in my view.

All the best

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your post. You're the first VI person I've come across using the Touch and I'd be fascinated at just how much of the functionality of the device you are able to use whilst remaining with the stock firmware. If you don't mind my prying, but you must have some residual sight to handle the touch interface? Would you say this is worth considering for others needing to look for a new media player (for example, if my iPod Video ever kicks the
bucket) or would it be too difficult to handle?

Now for your questions. For video conversion I use AVS Video Converter. It is a paid for solution but offers a wide range of presets you can choose from, including for iPods. It's also accessible with my Supernova screen reader, or easy to see if you are using magnification. No doubt someone will offer a free solution as I'm sure I've heard of one myself, but the
name escapes me right now.

HTH.

OK Folks!

Santa Claus brought me a great new little gadget for xmas! Yes, the new 32 GB Ipod Touch. I've listened to a couple of podcasts re this and have got to grips pretty well with it's function and how to get around it. I have a couple of questions however. I know there is a more specialised list which T and T run but wondered if there were many on the list? Also, does anyone
have the sub details?

Now for my questions:

1 What is the easiest way to get .avi files onto the ipod? I believe they need to be converted first, how do people find the accessibility of these
conversion tools? Also, where can I get the most accessible one from?

When I go into the music section of the front screen, is there a way to
easily switch between artis, album and song views? How easy is it to set up
play lists?

Anyone got any suggestions for really cool aps which are free? Also though,
any paid ones which, again, are accessible?

I am pretty knocked out at how easy the touch screen is to manipulate. As an additional question, how accessible are apple mac computers in general? presumably, there is more facilities in the full blown voice over ap? I hear it is akin to window eyes? So, does that mean you can get the list of
links etc in safari?

Are there any more tutorials etc for the touch? And my final question, How
similar is it to the I-phone?

Best wishes.

Steve
