Not at all, Ibrahim. Strictly the shop drongo.

The sim card had nothing to do with it. Both our sim cards and phones
work pretty well world-wide.

Basically the Vodaphone Internet Dongle doesn't work abroad - full
stop - Period.

George.

Hi George.

I hope your not trying to compare me to a drongo *smile*, but
technically he was right in that as long as you have the compatible
sim in a compatible dongle, your free to roam whenever and where ever
you want providing you have network coverage. If Voda impose limits
on what you can and cannot do with the broadband then that's their
affair and something you need to take up with them.

All the best, Ibrahim.

        Hi Ibrahim,

That's what we thought - as did the drongo in the shop.

However Vodafone's technical support confirmed he was wrong,
and we got a refund.

        George.

        Hi George.

That's strange with regards the dongle. The dongle has the
same technology in it as a mobile phone in that it has the radio
portion of the handset which is responsible for connecting to the
network. Have you spoken to Vodaphone's technical support people
about making sure you had a compatible dongle for the sim card you
choose to use abroad? I don't know anything about Vodaphone I'm
afraid, but on Three, you have a special sim called a USim which you
use in your dongle and which enables HSDPA access or 3g where that is
unavailable.

        All the best, Ibrahim.

                Hi Steve,

The Vodafone simcard lets my wife use her Nokia 6600
phone virtually world-wide. Same with my N96. But that's not quite
the issue.

It's the bit between the laptop and the internet
that's the issue. FWIW, the laptop is an HP with Wireless and
Bluetooth.

She understood (as we now know wrongly) that a
Vodafone USB dongle would connect directly and automatically to a
Vodafone partner in Denmark, in the same way as her mobile phone does.

Walking Hotspot "looks" like it may be a solution, but
how does it know who and where to dial in a foreign country. The web
page doesn't seen to give much information on that front.

                George.

                Hi George,

As I understand it, if you want data in a foreign
land, you have to get a Sim card for that country. I think that is the
only way to do it that I know of anyway.

Having said that, when I went to Cyprus, my Sim just
worked.

I don't use dongles though, I use Walking Hotspot,
http://www.walkinghotspot.com <http://www.walkinghotspot.com/> on a
phone.

                All the best

                Steve

I dare say this question will surprise the mobile
phone experts, but here goes.

My wife travels regularly to Denmark, and was sold a
USB dongle by Vodafone which, she was assured would provide access
abroad. Well it seems the sales person in the Northampton shop was
about as bright as a toc h lamp. Head office assured my wife that
this will not work outside the U.K.

So what do you guys use with your laptops to access
the internet and check mail when sitting on a train in a foreign
country?

                George.
