does sound interesting but i'd have to have a very good reason to move from n82 with knfb and the price seems a bit prohibitive!

Cheers

I can come in on this a bit now by saying I've today looked at Glenn's prototype. For those who know the Sonata Internet radio, the voice is the male who reads out your station list on there. I don't know his name, but the voice is pretty reasonable and certainly more favourable than those dreadful RealSpeak characters. That's just my personal point of view, however.

Glenn gave me some tins to get the LookTel to recognise, pea and ham soup, tomato soup, and baked beans. He also put money on the table and got LookTel to recognise it.

At the moment, as he and George are saying, the thing is not the finished product yet. It works on a Windows Smartphone, but this is set to go onto the Symbian platform as well. It is hoped that the software will be an all-in-one package where you don't have to purchase additional applications to make it work.

I have to say that the touch screen method takes a bit of getting used to. You tap once to identify an icon, and tap it again to activate it. My personal concern is the subscription and data costs one will incur, and the latter will be dependent on your network tariff I would imagine.

But it does look interesting of that there is no doubt. It is just too early to form a true opinion because it isn't finished yet. Very much a case of watch this space.

Quite simply because what may be right for the American market, is very often not suitable for the U.K. market, even given the fact that 200 blind users in America have been working with the developers for the past year or so.

And having now seen the LookTel myself, I can quite understand. This is why Glen Tookey, quite understandably, is regarding the U.K. version as an "Alpha", rather than "Beta". Many things do have to be Anglicised.

Suffice to say that when Glen and his team feel the product is ready for the UK market, it will be revealed, and will not necessarily be the final version either, thus allowing any changes potential users may deem essential.

All I will add is that what I saw was most impressive, to the point where having kept out of the phone market, I'm sorely tempted. It won't suit everyone by any means. If you have a sophisticated phone now, the extras offered may, or indeed may not, tempt you to upgrade.

George.

Why are they only testing Alpha software in this country because thee-mail I forwarded referred to Beta software.
