Hi Alexander,

Yeah - it's annoying when you've done something for ages with no problems, then all of a sudden you get errors...who knows whether that error did cause the problem. But I just learnt recently from painful experience to religiously back up e-mail and compact when offline.

I referred to Windows Explorer - meaning to back up your e-mail, go into Windows Explorer (or My Computer or whatever - never did work out what the difference was) and copy the dbx files to another location. A good/quick way to find them without having to remember the path is by going into the tools menu in Outlook Express, then into options. Press control tab till you get to the maintenance page. Find the Store Location button and press space. Then a dialog appears with an edit box showing the path to the store folder. It's a long path so press home, then shift end to select it, then control c to copy it. Then press escape a couple of times. Then go into the start menu, press enter on run, and paste the path into the box and press enter. Then the folder will open with your dbx files and you can select them and copy them wherever you want.

Hope that helps,
Catherine

Hi Catherine,

Thank you for your advice.

I did have the tool you are referring to on an old computer but I have not got it back on this computer as the PC it was on was running 98 and I now run XP home.

Thanks for the reminder about compacting when off line. I'll try and do this from mow on, however I have not had an error before when compacting as far as I can remember.

As to backing up e-mails, I take your point but,if you don't mind me asking, what did you mean by your reference to windows explorer?

Thank you for your help.
