Chris, I ended up being in hospital a few years back and used a laptop on
the ward.  For general use it was ok but they were quite cautious about net
connection.  I used my mobile as a modem but also, be aware of the data
package you are on.  I was with voda at that point and was categorically
told that the way i had connected to the system was a particular price and
would not be exceeded.  At the end of the month they tried to charge me
about £300!  Haha, when i argued with them, it was their mistake so I wasn't
charged but check it out first.

The usb dongle is probably the best way.
