I have no issue with them abandoning a format as long as the replacement stream is of equivalent value. This they have not bothered to do as they clearly just want to bully people away from the format. Moving on should not leave people behind who do not have an alternative technology currently available. The delivery of radio by long wave is far more ancient technology but there is no restlessness to abandon this as they would not get away with it. It is only our minority status which makes their strategy in any sense politically acceptable.

Hi David,

They are not just picking on blind people with their specialist devices
though. Windows Media streaming is very old if not ancient tech, and they
need to move on I guess.

All the best

Yes it is clear that the BBC want to dissuade people from using these
streams. Hence their lack of signposting to these alternative streams
and the abandonment of online football and Cricket through these
streams, compared to the service provided on the previous Windows Media
format.

Given that these sports feeds are by far the most popular spoken word
radio content the BBC broadcast this seriously affects the credibility
of these so called replacement streams. The BBC themselves announce the
importance of this coverage for viable radio. during the last Ashes the
BBC announced that even on the long wave Radio 4 the radio audience
listening to the Ashes Cricket dwarfed any other radio 4 content. They
announced this on a Feedback program to explain why it was inconceivable
that they could accede to some request from Radio 4 listeners for
cricket to be removed and only hosted on Five Live Sports Extra.
Apparently it is necessary to protect cricket coverage for the Radio 4
Long wave audience but perfectly acceptable to remove it for blind folk
using specialist devices.

But as I said in my original post the shoutcast streams will only be

Hi

The Plextalk Pocket will play the BBC Shoutcast streams. I downloaded
them from the Mikesradioworld website.

Please write to me off-list if you need any more information.
