Colin, I think this down to the type of phone you have, I am on Talk Talk and tried this out, I rang the homeline using my mobile and pressed the recall button. It gives the tone of dialing the number, but this is all that happens. When threatened, press your recall button, usually this results in a broken dial tone, the other person is left with the usual "please hold the line" message, put your phone down, call is ended, no problems.
