If he already has Total Recorder on his machine, he may just prefer the CTRL+T option to trim the start and end. (I haven't used this for a considerable while, but that used to work for me.)

Thanks all for that info. Think he only really needs a basic recorder, with the ability to trim the ends, and save the results in MP3. Guess he'll want to record some streams and some through the line in on the laptop. I presume that Goldwave will do that easily enough while ignoring the screenreader, but wonder if the free version of NCHwavepad would do just as well? To set the beginning marker, press the "[" key, which is to the right of the P key on a standard keyboard. To set an end marker, press the "]" key which is to the right of the start marker key.
