The problem with caller id is that most of the companies that do cold calling withhold their number so it is impossible to differentiate between them and friends/family who are ex-directory. A couple of things to note with caller preference, it only includes British companies so you can still get annoying calls from America, for instance. It takes up to 4 weeks to get your number on the preference list and new companies also have 4 weeks to get their databases up to date. Whenever I get a call from a company I ask them to take me off their database. I'm not sure, but I think they are obliged to do so if asked.
