Hi Adrian - 2 Questions then if I may: Does the IPlayer still need to be connected to the aerial when plugged in to the phone line to access channel 900? I ask because my set-up has my aerial and phone points in separate rooms! You also said that sighted help is needed for the on-screen menus, I'm wondering then how accessible this box is to the totally blind, is it possible to independently select TV and Radio stations? Is it a case of knowing what numbers the channels are on, and keying them in on a keypad, or do they have to be selected from a menu list that requires sighted help each time? I assume it's configurable but by default the netgem simply automaticly accesses the internet when ever you perform a task which requires it for example if you have a phone line connected between the netgem and a wallpoint and you type 900 in to the remote control to access channel 900 then you will hear the box perform a dial-up connect much like listening to a pc perform a dial-up conection. if you aren't connected to the phone line you'll simply hear the modem click, a short pause then click off again as it finds no connection. I haven't researched the dial-up settings and costs in any detail as like others I simply connect the box every few months to check for software updates but my guess is that it is an 0845 number so the money will be going to your telephone service provider. if you do have access to a free dial-up number with your broadband service provider, many provide a no or low cost dial up connection for the rare occasion on which asdl connections go down, then i expect you can set up the netgem to use this number instead. Does this mean that the IPlayer has a phone keypad to dial up the Netjem ISP? How would I be billed for the penny a minute charges; Netjem won't want BT getting the dosh :] Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: Adrian Higginbotham To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Monday, January 09, 2006 11:55 AM Subject: [access-uk] Re: The Netjem IPlayer Andy - what I think hasn't been made clear is that while you can use your own internet service to connect the i-player to the web providing you have the necessary sockets and cables you don't have to do this. it comes with default dial-up settings pre configured so you can download software upgreades and access channel 900 for todays audio described program listing at a cost of one penny per minute. actually unplugging the telephone cable when you have finished is a good idea as particularly when accessing channel 900 it isn't clear how to disconnect from the netgem isp. The Iplayer does not have an Ethernet socket - just a phone socket and a USB socket for connecting it to a wireless card or other accessories. If you had a router you could do it wirelessly if you had a wireless router and USB card in the Iplayer, I don't use this however as I just connect it to a phone socket every few months to do the upgrades on it etc. Andrew. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Andy Collins Sent: 08 January 2006 15:33 To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] The Netjem IPlayer Hi all - I understand that the IPlayer is blind friendly, and can receive the Audiodescription service, and has an Ethernet connection for upgrades, and programme guides etc. Unfortunately, I don't have a phone socket in the same room as my TV, and My PC is also in another room! I don't think my PC has an Ethernet socket, but not sure, as I don't know what these sockets look like, and although I'm on ADSL, my router doesn't seem to be a router in the conventional sense, it only has one USB connection for the PC, and no other inputs/outputs. Does anybody know how I might go about occasionally connecting the IPlayer to the internet given my circumstances?
