Hi Jackie -

Since the headphones socket broke on this laptop, I've been using external sound cards. My experience is to advise against the cheap ones, commonly priced at 4-10 quid. The sound might be ok [depending on what you want from it] but the build is usually very poor, and the cases brake far too easily.

The current, and best one I'm using, is the:

Creative Labs 70SB129000002 Sound Blaster X-Fi Go PRO USB Sound Card

from Amazon for about 29 quid, It comes with headphones out and mic in, and as well as plugging directly in to a USB port, also comes with a short [about 3 inch] extension cable, and also has an attached cap to cover the USB plug, when not in use.The housing is solid, and will take some where and tear in my opinion. It also comes with a cd of it's own drivers, for those wanting to customize the sound. I just plugged it in and let it go, using the onboard driver, and that for my ears is absolutely fine. And yes, if you unplug it, the onboard speakers kick back inn.

One thing to keep in mind, is that the housing is a little wider than a pen drive, so if your friend is planning to use it without the short extension cable, so that it goes directly in to the port, then depending on the layout of their laptop, it might make pushing something else in to the next port, especially if another USB port, very tight. -

Subject: [access-uk] Using a USB external sound card

Enquiring for someone not subscribed here. How well does an external sound card work using USB on a laptop? Are there any makes to recommend or indeed
avoid? And does the sound just default to the laptop's own on-board sound
once the external is disconnected? Forgive me, but I have absolutely no
idea how these things work, never having used one before.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns
