There have recently been some interesting developments regarding
Hotmail/Live email. For some time Microsoft have provided both a web
presence and also communiation over some email clients using their
proprietory protocol. For most screen reader users the preferrable
option was to use a mail client to access this service using Outlook
Express and certain versions of Outlook as well.

Last year Microsoft informed users of Outlook Express that they would
have to switch to using Windows Live Mail to continue with the free
service using a Windows mail client. Until very recently this was the
position I understood. However Microsoft appears to have opened up the
service so that Hotmail/Live mail can be access using standard POP3
protocol without any charges.

The practical upshot of all this is that those who were on XP and used
Hotmail/Live mail can now go back to using Outlook Express. I have
already set up two POP3 email clients this way with the information
below and it certainly works. Furthermore those using a mobile phone
should with a bit of effort be able to access the mail service using
their phone as well. Here are some links which may help.

Eleanor Hotmail is free for us UK residents. If you're happy with Gmail
best to stick with it. I mean Hotmail's ok but... I'll see what I can do
with instructions.
