Hi Mel, I have been using the Itunes software to get my music on to the
Ipod. So far I have just used the menues to do this but there are shortcuts
which were posted to the Jaws list sometime ago. (if anyone is interested I
could post them here as well. Basically I press alt to get in to the menu
(it doesn't appear to have a title that WE can read) and press curssor down
till I reach add folder. I then enter a dialogue which looks like a standard
windows open/save dialogue. You simply tab, shift tab around and press enter
on the folder you want to add. You can also add multiple folders and
subfolders.
I keep meaning to have a go at removing songs from my Ipod but because I've
been really busy I haven't had a chance. But from what I have read to do
this I willl need to make use of either WE's cursor or the Jaws equivalent.
Personally I have WE version 5 and use that as my main screenreader but I
also have Jaws 5 on my system as well so I'm going to experiment a bit and
see which of them is easier to use with Itunes. Its not the easiest bit of
software to use by any means and Apple could have made a much better job of
its design. Oh I'm sure it looks very nice if you can see it but obviously
we can't.
As to using the Ipod itself it does take a bit of getting used to and its
not for everyone. I use it in the following way:
When the Ipod is first turned on your located in a menue that has music at
the top. To move round the menue you move your finger round the wheel. As
you do this you here a clicking sound either from the Ipod, or the
headphones or both depending on how you have it set. To select the
particular option you press the enter key (or it might be called the select
key) this is the slightly raised center of the wheel. Once you have reached
the bottom or top of the menue (whatever menue it is) you can't go any
further. The Ipod does not wrap around to the top. The music option is the
first option in the top menu. Under this is located all the various ways to
play your music, IE by type, album, artis, etc. Artis is the second option
in this menu. After this you move in to a menu where all the artists are
listed. The first option is all. I usually select this. Then I press play to
begin playback of my music.
This means that I now have a playlist of everything on the Ipod by artist.
To move forward in a track you press down on the right hand end of the
wheel, to go back the left, to pause/stop the bottom and to move back to the
previous menu (where you selected all artists) you press the top of the
wheel.
It would be difficult to select a particular song or artist if you had a lot
on an Ipod because you would need to remember the order of things. Some
people may not like my method but it works for me just fine.
I also managed to copy my audible books on to the Ipod before I went away to
Istanbul. That was easy also.
Hope this helps
Yusuf

Hi Yusuf,
How are you using it? Which software are you using and which screen reader?

Hi Mel, It won't because Apple have not allowed this. I have read somewhere that there is a way of getting round this so that the Ipod can be used as an external drive but I haven't had a chance to look at how this would be done.
I am using the 40 GB model quite well so it is possible for me at least.

Hi,
I was wondering whether it would be possible to connect the Ipod to the PC without installing the software, and whether it would appear as a drive in Explorer. Then files could just be copied over? I have done this with a digital camera and wonder if it would work in the same way.

There are some people who apparently have no sight and who say they can use and IPod without any problems. I looked at one of the click wheel models and think it would be next to impossible to do.
So, the IPod shuffle seems the most suitable alternative. Designed without a screen, with a wheel with fixed functions, it seems perfect. Plus, it's only £99.99 for a 1Gb version. Shame the accessories are so bleeding expensive.
The problem with Ipods isn't really the hardware however. It's the ITunes software that can cause you the most trouble. A lot of people have reported that it is a swine with screen-readers. In fact, it is that bad that it won't even work with Apples new screen-reader they are bundling with the next release of there operating system.
There is however a solution, Anapod explorer from red chair software. This now supports the IPod shuffle and gives access to the shuffle like most other devices in Windows Explorer.
Of course, you have to use another method of getting music onto your PC, but at least you can now get it onto an IPod and look cool!
