Hi Simon. If you have obtained an APE file, this is a Monkey's Audio file. Monkey's Audio is a <http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/lossless_compression.cfm> lossless audio <http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/compression.cfm> compression <http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/codec.cfm> codec . Since it is lossless, there is no quality loss from the source audio once it is compressed. It achieves a compression rate of about 40%. It's main advantage over <http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/lossy_compression.cfm> lossy compression formats such as <http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/mp3.cfm> MP3 is obvious, the quality of MP3 is not near as good. However, the files are much larger than simple MP3 files which is why MP3 files would be more available online than APE files. You need to have a player that supports Monkey's Audio. You can download one from here: http://www.monkeysaudio.com/ I hope this helps. I can convert them in to more standard formats, thanks to easy cd da extractor, but I tried winamp, realplayer, quicktime, i-tunes, and windows media player, and none of them would actually play the files. does anyone out there know what I can use to actually play these .ape files please?
