I'm sure these ideas are much older. However both LLNL and Flometrics
modern variants are convenient for applications and as a design
baseline. I also see some later articles - later than 2005 -
discussing designs similar to LLNL piston pump.
It's a rather tricky construction :) given that it doesn't use
electricity even for control functions, it automatically switches
between fill up and push down modes for each cylinder, and I don't
quite understand enough of how it does that.

gas driven piston/membrane-less fluid pumps aren't really new.
you also find stirling machines using the same basic idea.
The reverse is fluid driven gas pumps.
( with one special app in the domain of tide energy utilisation.)
