Enter SpaceX, particularly their Raptor which is claiming 100 flights.

Which is to say, if you build a jet engine for absolute maximum
performance with minimum weight and a very short design life, with
reliability and safety issues very much secondary, then surprise surprise,
you get something as flaky and short-lived as a typical rocket engine. :-)
