Note that http://www.spaceuk.org/htp/htp.htm claims the Black Knight engines' single gimbal axis was radial (swinging in and out), which is wrong -- they gimbaled tangentially, which is why they could do roll control as well as pitch and yaw. In its picture of the 301, you can see the inboard gimbal assemblies if you look closely.
