Between Goddard's secrecy fetish and his lone-wolf operation, there's precious little information on his thinking and the rationale for his design decisions, alas.

I'd guess that trying to do regen with gasoline would quickly crud up the cooling passages with polymerization products. And you wouldn't be able to count on two batches in a row having exactly the same composition.
