Or you could maybe cheat by using a hi-res video cam with the IR+UV filter
replaced with a 1um bandpass or longpass. That should make the sky black
provided it's clear.

You can see some of the brighter stars from the ground during daytime with a
telescope if the air is clear. A blue filter helps.
