From what I've heard, that's actually exactly the idea: the tire
compound used is one that gets stickier at high temperature. The spin
is on purpose to heat them up, and even the wrinkling is something
they design the tires to do to ease the transition from spinning to
sticking.
Racers, though, are used to the idea of tires costing a thousand
dollars and only being good for one race.
