Former liberal tree hugger here, bought my first solar panels in the 70s when
they were expensive and inefficient but I believed that was the way of the
future. Now that I've grown up and worked for mining companies and such, I see
the need for both. In the past 10 years I've planted over 40 trees but also
burned up a lot of fossil fuels going to FAR to launch rockets. I have a friend
down the street that is a liberal climate change person and yet he still heats
his house with propane and recently bought a big V-8 SUV that he usually drives
by himself. When I asked why he didn't buy a Volt or Leaf or some of the other
offerings coming out and put solar on his roof he said someday he will.
In his eyes, the government should solve the problem, mandate that everyone has
to go green and drive electric or public transportation. At the time I was a
tree hugger and belonged to the Sierra Club (my wife was a chapter newsletter
editor) I remember just starting work for a mining company. On a trip to a
favorite backpacking trail 250 miles away, I suggested we car pool in my 4 door
Honda Civic. "Too crowded" was the reply, lets take my Suburban, it has more
room. While burning up lots more gas their discussion centered around those bad
mining and oil companies and how they are raping the land. They didn't
appreciate that everything in the Suburban was either mined or pumped from the
ground.
I've spent most of my life on both sides of the fence, the only solution is for
both sides to work together.

Subject: [AR] What do you tell a "No Rockets!" tree-planter?
You prolly know one, or three. "Stop wasting money with rockets to
Mars and spend that on planting trees to stop global warming,
instead!" I'm at a loss for responses other than "Let's do both." What
is your repartee to that manner of thinking?
