Today, while working in the backyard, I heard a rather high pitched "kil, kil, kil" sound. I looked up just in time to see a Sharp-shinned Hawk land in a tall locust tree at the edge of the yard. Five of my pigeons were on the top of their loft or sitting in a tree next to it. They saw the hawk about the same time I did. They exploded into the air going away from the hawk over the neighbor's pasture as if someone had set their tails on fire. I lost sight of them through the trees, but within 30 seconds or so they were high in the sky above the neighbor's house on up the road. I don't think the hawk knew they were there near the loft. I believe if it had known, it wouldn't have vocalized and given its location away. After about a minute the Sharpie left its perch and glided toward the woods, away from the direction the pigeons had taken. The pigeons didn't return for about 45 minutes. With fall migration getting under way these hawk sightings may become an almost daily event, especially if they see the pigeons. Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt
