It sort of makes my point. There are lots of definitions, much confusion, and
the word can be used in negative ways.

I started with the basic word Islamist and found many references to Islamism.
The general connotation of Islamist is 'one who practices Islamism', most
likely a political orientation of the religious beliefs espoused by Mohammad (I
am not sure about the spelling)

Islamism

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about the movement of political Islam. For the religion of
Islam, see Islam <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam> .
[

sm (Urdu <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urdu_language> : اسلام پرستی‎; Arabic
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_language> : إسلاموية‎), also known as
Political Islam, utilizes certain Muslim "doctrines, beliefs and values as the
foundation of a political structure that supporters of that ideology have
called 'the Islamic State.'"[1]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-1> Islamists can have
varying interpretations on various Quranic
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quran> suras
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surah> and ayahs
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayah> . Islamist views emphasize the
implementation of Sharia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharia> (Islamic law);
of pan-Islamic <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-Islamism> political unity;
and of the selective removal of non-Muslim, particularly Western
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_world> military, economic, political,
social, or cultural influences in the Muslim world
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_world> that they believe to be
incompatible with Islam.[2]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-2>

Some observers (Graham Fuller) suggest Islamism's tenets are less strict, and
can be defined as a form of identity politics
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_politics> or "support for [Muslim]
identity, authenticity, broader regionalism, revivalism, [and] revitalization
of the community."[3] <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-3>
Following the Arab Spring <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_Spring> , Olivier
Roy <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivier_Roy_%28professor%29> described
political Islam as "increasingly interdependent" with political democracy.[4]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-foreignpolicy1-4>

Islamists[5] <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-5> generally
oppose the use of the term, claiming that their political beliefs and goals are
simply an expression of Islamic religious belief. Similarly, some experts
(Bernard Lewis <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Lewis> ) favor the term
"activist Islam",[6] <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-ICG-6>
[7] <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-autogenerated2-7> or
"political Islam" (Trevor Stanley),[8]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-8> and some (Robin Wright
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Wright_%28author%29> ) have equated the
term "militant Islam" with Islamism.[9]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-9>

Central and prominent figures of modern Islamism include Hasan al-Banna
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hasan_al-Banna> , Sayyid Qutb
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sayyid_Qutb> , Abul Ala Maududi
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abul_Ala_Maududi> ,[10]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism#cite_note-10> and Ruhollah Khomein
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruhollah_Khomeini>

But I'm not sure about that word, Islamist. I think it was coined by
people
who lump all Muslims together, and assume they are terrorists. I don't
like
to defame a particular religion by using its name when what I mean is an
extremist. The other appropriate word would be terrorist except that now
people have begun to use that word as if it were synonymous with Muslim.
Useage can get very tricky.

Miriam:

I tried to stay within the confines of previous usage, i.e., Muslim.

have long known that the problem with this world is its inhabitants
not its
religions.

It would be a much more peaceful place if it were not for the
population of
items we call people.

I think the correct word is extremist. They come from all

Good points. I had forgotten about the 'Muslim' comment.
Perhaps
he should
have said 'Islamist'.

Ben Carson has also said that no Muslim should be
President.
Substitute the
word :Jew" for that and how does it sound to you? He may
sound
better than
Donald Trump, but that's not saying much. I'd say that
the
best
Republican
candidate we have is Hillary Clinton because the
Republicans, as a
sane,
respectable party, don't exist anymore. The Democratic
Party
is what
the
Republicans used to be. Bernie Sanders and the
Congressional
Progressive
Caucus are what the Democratic party used to be. Back in
those days,
the
Democratic Party had a southern wing which included all
the
racists.
However, Reagan's southern strategy incorporated the
southern wing
of the
Democratic Party into the current Republican Party.

All:

I happened to watch and listen to the TV News Show
referenced.

Ben Carson came across to me as being a thoughtful and
considerate
person
who has some very strong views about the social
conditions
of today.

He is, in my opinion, a better candidate than Donald
Trump
at this
point in
time.

Dr. Ben Carson isn't shy about making

during
an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" on

GOP

out
his
uncompromising
stance on the polarizing issue of abortion (via
The
New York

The Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson
said Sunday
he
believed
that abortion should be outlawed even in cases
of
rape and
incest,
comparing
the procedure with slavery.
"I would not be in favor of killing a baby
because
the baby
came
about in
that way," Mr. Carson said on NBC's "Meet the

"the
many
stories of people who have led very useful
lives who
were
the result
of rape
or incest."
Mr. Carson, who has not been shy about using
slavery
and
Nazi
metaphors,
held up what he said was a historic parallel
with
abortion.
"During slavery, a lot of the slave owners
thought
that they
had the
right
to do whatever they wanted to that slave," said
Mr.
Carson,
a former
brain

what if the
abolitionist had said, you know, 'I don't

slavery. I

Where would
we be?"
Carson had previously drawn a parallel to
slavery
when
discussing
Obamacare
two years ago, during a speech at the Values
Voter

Washington,
D.C., in which he said, "You know, Obamacare is
really, I
think, the
worst
thing that has happened in this nation since
slavery."
During his sit-down Sunday with "Meet the Press"
moderator
Chuck
Todd,
Carson also addressed his willingness to use the
Holocaust
and Nazi
Germany
to illustrate what he views as modern-day
societal
dangers.
"Interestingly
enough, in the last several weeks I've heard
from
many
people in the
Jewish
community, including rabbis, who have said,
'You're
spot-on,' "
Carson said.
