President Trump and other foreign leaders arriving. They were met with
immediate mass protests of globalization policies that urge corporate trade
agreements, neoliberal privatization and austerity as well as inadequate action
on climate change. More than 100,000 protesters are expected and 20,000 police
are on hand to control and arrest them. The Huff Post reported: Violent clashes
erupted Thursday between police and protesters in Hamburg, Germany, as world
leaders are set to attend the G-20 summit in the city. Several people were
injured, according to HuffPost Germany reporters on the scene. Hamburg police
said 76 officers were injured. Earlier the department said three were
hospitalized for the injuries. They implicated small groups of protesters in
the violence. Police used smoke grenades and water cannons on protestors,
reporters said, while activists threw stones, bottles and explosives, and set
at least one car ablaze. Fires were still burning in the street as of 11 p.m.

person living in Hamburg wants to leave the city during the G20 summit on July
7-8. Their decision is not surprising: who is crazy enough to be in a city with
Trump, Erdogan, Putin, Merkel and the Saudis, 20,000 policeman and most likely
100,000 people protesting on the streets? When the last G20 summit took place
in Hangzhou, a city with more than six million inhabitants, China found a
brilliant solution to this problem. Weeks in advance of the 2016 G20 summit,
where China announced its decision to ratify the Paris Agreement, the Chinese
government declared a week-long holiday and encouraged citizens to leave the
city. After the trouble-free summit in China, the person who pointed to the map
of Germanyand said, "Let's do the next G20 in Hamburg!" must not be
exceptionally bright. With a long leftist tradition and strong activist
presence, Hamburg is probably the city most unlikely to host a problem-free
summit like the one in Hangzhou. The grievances of the local population aside,
there is a good reason to think this summer's G20 summit will be the most
important international political event of the year. -more-

United States, which for years has been losing internal state legitimacy, is in
crisis. (It’s already lost external state legitimacy, the Trump brand
reportedly now distrusted by three-fourths of the world.) This means that a
majority of American citizens no longer believe that the political and economic
elites are working in the public interest. Once this happens, to cite Humpty
Dumpty: “all the king’s horses [the police and military apparatuses] and all
the king’s men [loyal state officials and publicity agents] couldn’t put Humpty
[state legitimacy] together again.” Short of implementing explicit police state
controls over a rebellious public, which appears unnecessary in the present
somatic corporate state, the ruling class must resort to intensified and
unending propaganda (state and commercial). This is exactly what PR guru Edward
Bernays had proposed in his book by that title in 1928. We� ��re well into that
propaganda society, with continuous mass distraction and censorship of
authentic alternative news sources – all directed toward maintaining a public
order of complacency, spectatorship, and establishment-orchestrated political

I’m acutely aware that, 241 years ago, the United States of America issued a
Declaration of Independence from the UK, noting that King George III had sought
“the establishment of an absolute TyranA system of checks and balances
introduced by the Founding Fathers was supposed to prevent tyranny from arising
in the liberated United States of America, and yet, at various times in its
history, these safeguards have been discarded — during the Civil War, for
example, and during the Second World War, in the shameful internment of
Japanese Americans. Another example is still taking place now — at Guantánamo
Bay, in Cuba, where the U.S. runs a naval base, and where, since January 11,
2002, it has been holding prisoners seized in the “war on terror” that George
W. Bush declared after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Under the
laws and treaties we rely on to protect ourselves from executive tyranny,
people can only be deprived of their liberty if they are accused of a crime,
when they must speedily be put on trial in a court with a judge and a jury, or
if they are seized on a battlefield during wartime, when they can be held until
the end of hostilities, unmolested and with the protections of the Geneva

companies averaged $13.1 million in 2016. That’s 347 times what the average
employee makes. So CEOs make a lot of money. But, some say, so do athletes and
movie stars. Why pick on corporate bosses, then? First, because the market sets
compensation for athletes and movie stars, but not for CEOs. Teams and movie
studios bid for athletes and movie stars. CEO pay is set by a rigged system
that has nothing to do with supply and demand. NBA teams bid for LeBron James
because his skills are portable: He’d be a superstar on any team. CEOs’ skills
are much more closely tied to their knowledge of a single company — its
finances, products, personnel, culture, competitors, etc. Such knowledge and
skills are best gained working within the company, and not worth much outside.
In fact, a CEO jumping between large companies happens less than once a year.
And when they jump, they usually fail. Lacking a market, CEO pay is set by a
series of complex administrative pay practices. Usually a board, often
dominated by other sitting or retired CEOs, sets their CEO’s pay based on the
compensation of other highly paid CEOs. The CEO can then double or triple this
target by surpassing negotiated bonus goals. -more-

escalation of violence on the eve of Friday and Saturday’s G20 summit, after
local people complained that heavy-handed police have ratcheted up tensions in
Germany’s second largest city. A fleet of hi-tech water cannons was used to
disperse crowds partying near the conference venue on Tuesday evening. Five
people were injured and five arrests made, said police, who have warned that
protesters could be hoarding weapons at secret locations. Authorities in
Germany’s second-largest city are preparing for the arrival of an unprecedented
lineup of controversial world leaders including Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin
and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as well as thousands of international protesters
ranging from anti-capitalist activists to middle-class families keen to voice
dissent. Police say they expect a core of about 5,000 violent protesters to
gather in the city’s historic port area for a “Welcome to Hell” march just as
world leaders and international delegates start arriving at Hamburg airport on
Thursday afternoon. The Hamburg police chief, Ralf Martin Meyer, expressed
concerns that the city would see “not just sit-in protests but massive
assaults”, as anarchists from Scandinavia, Switzerland and Italy joined up with
local activists in a city with a long tradition of leftwing protest and annual

western media, the US is quietly creating a hostile military footprint inside
Syria. By establishing a chain of airbases, military outposts and missile bases
inside Syria, the US is illegally, stealth-occupying a sovereign nation. The
number of US military installations in Syria has increased to eight bases
according to recent reports, and possibly nine according to one other military
analyst. We should also not forget the malevolent presence of Israel in the
criminally annexed southern Syrian territory of the Golan Heights. This could
just as easily be included in the list of US military outposts inside Syria.
Two regional intelligence sources disclosed mid-June that the US military moved
a new truck-mounted, long-range rocket launcher from Jordan to a US base in
al-Tanf in Southeastern Homs, near the Iraqi and Jordanian borders, stepping up
its presence in the area. The sources said the (High Mobility Artil lery Rocket
Systems – HIMARS) had moved into the desert garrison, which saw a buildup in
recent weeks as tensions escalate after the US-led coalition struck positions
of the Syrian forces to prevent them advancing toward the al-Tanf base. -more-

demonstrators rallied at Lafayette Park Friday afternoon to protest U.S.
involvement in Korea, just as President Moon Jae-In met with his counterpart,
Donald Trump in the Oval Office. The protesters uniformly agreed that it is
continued U.S. presence and bellicose language coming out of Washington, which
has destroyed prospects for peace in Korea. “[President Moon] was elected [in
May] with a mandate to change course. He said he would during the election
campaign,” Sarah Sloan, with the anti-war Answer Coalition, told me. “We’re
saying: ‘live up to it.’ I think he has different pressures on him. We oppose
the deployment of THAAD - Terminal High Altitude Area Defense – [which has been
deployed in South Korea].” THAAD is an advanced system designed to intercept
short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal
flight phase. It is believed to be capable of intercepting North Ko rea’s
intermediate-range ballistic missiles, as it is equipped with long-range radar.
In July 2016, military officials in South Korea and the U.S. agreed to deploy
it to counter threats. -more-

the theme of opposing Invenergy‘s proposed $1 billion fracked gas and diesel
oil burning power plant has taken first prize in the Glocester, Rhode Island
Ancients and Horribles Parade. The float and marchers won first place in two
categories, Large Float and Best Current Event. It should be noted that there
were at least two groups opposing the plant marching in the parade, and that
not everyone marching in the parade opposing the plant were backing all the
messaging on display in the pictures below. The Burrillville Land Trust marched
earlier in the parade and had its own messaging separate from the float and
marchers who won awards. Paul Roselli, president of the Burrillville Land
Trust, spoke briefly (in the video below) about the need to finish the power
plant off before next year’s parade. After the Burrillville Land Trust and
separated by some bands and other marchers came the award winning float. T his
year, actors pantomimed Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Johnston Mayor Joseph
Polisena enabling Invenergy’s director of development John Niland as he
consumed the Scituate Reservoir. -more-

and local levels, governments have dramatically increased their spending on
criminalization, policing, and mass incarceration while drastically cutting
investments in basic infrastructure and slowing investment in social safety net
programs. The choice to resource punitive systems instead of stabilizing and
nourishing ones does notmake communities safer. Instead, study after study
shows that a living wage, access to holistic health services and treatment,
educational opportunity, and stable housing are far more successful in reducing
crime than police or prisons. This report examines racial disparities, policing
landscapes, and budgets in twelve jurisdictions across the country, comparing
the city and county spending priorities with those of community organizations
and their members. While many community members, supported by research and
established best practices, assert that increased spending on police do not
make them safer, cities and counties continue to rely overwhelmingly on
policing and incarceration spending while under-resourcing less damaging, more
fair, and more effective safety initiatives. Each profile also highlights
current or prospective campaigns that seek to divest resources away from police
and prisons towards communities and their development. -more-

Duke Energy brought dozens of demonstrators to Lake Julian on Tuesday. They
called for independence from fossil fuels on Independence Day—promoting
renewable energy, like wind and solar. "For a long time people have talked
about the need for a clean energy revolution in our country. The good news is,
in a lot of ways, it's already underway,” Buncombe County Commissioner Brownie
Newman, who spoke at the event, said. Newman helped fire up more than a hundred
people at Lake Julian Park. "At our last county commission meeting, with the
encouragement of some of the people that are here today, I along with county
commissioners Jasmine Beach-Ferrara and Ellen Frost, and Al Whitesides proposed
to establish a 100 percent clean and renewable goal for Buncombe County,"
Newman said. Pro-environmental group Community Roots hosted the event and
eventually led the crowd to the water. Tyler Garrison, a board member with
Community Roots, then led the paddle towards the Duke Energy plant. "We hope
number one we'll accomplish, which we already have accomplished, a greater
sense of solidarity in the community [which we're] all pushing for [and] what
we all want to see,” Garrison said, “[to] stop the oppression of the fossil
fuel empire that's currently got their hands around our necks." -more-

was asked to name her “greatest political achievement,” she smiled her best
cat-that-swallowed-the-canary smile and purred, “Tony Blair and New Labour.”In
their recent campaigns, Sanders and Corbyn laid out specific progressive
policies to address the real-life problems facing their constituents and their
countries and to raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations to fully fund
healthcare, education and other vital public services. This represents a
dramatic U-turn from the vague, deceptive talking points of “center-left”
Democratic, Labour and Socialist politicians of the past generation, under
cover of which they quietly sold out their constituents to corporate,
plutocratic and military-industrial interests. The true measure of the
Reagan-Thatcher counterrevolution was not how Reagan and Thatcher changed their
own parties’ policies but that they remade their opposition in their own image
and thus marginalized progressive politics for a generation in both their
countries, clearing the way for the neoliberal transformation of society.
Reagan and Thatcher launched a race to the bottom that politicians in France,
Germany, Japan and the rest of the developed world soon joined in with. -more-
