By Rachel Mack for Americans Who Tell The Truth. The great civil rights
activist Dick Gregory died this week. His book, Nigger, was published when I
was nine years old and had a long-lasting impact on my political development
and views. He spoke at my university and added to helping to shape my political
views and push me toward activism. When we organized the Occupation of Freedom
Plaza in Washington, DC he was a regular visitor and spoke at the event. -more-

By Chris Hedges for Truth Dig - In a special edition of "On Contact," Truthdig
columnist Chris Hedges visits Anderson, Ind., formerly a center of car
production. He witnesses the economic and psychological impact on workers
caused by the flight of General Motors jobs overseas. The city has changed
dramatically since the 1970s when, at the peak of American automobile
manufacturing, a third of Anderson's 70,000 residents worked at General Motors.
Over the past 30 years, Anderson's population has decreased as thousands upon
thousands of well-paid union jobs have been lost. Watch the video above in
which Hedges interviews people in what used to be "big car country" and
documents what's become of Anderson now. -more-

Don’t Feed The Trolls — How To Combat The Alt-Right

By Kazu Haga for Waging Nonviolence - Nazism and white supremacy are forms of
violence. Let’s start there. The constitution does not protect violence, and
I’m happy to see that the California chapter of the ACLU has taken a stand
against protecting the “free speech” of hate groups. But with or without
marching permits, it is clear that public displays of hatred are a growing
trend in the United States. And as much as I don’t want to give these groups
more attention, it is also clear that simply ignoring them is not going to make
them go away. So what do we do? Many communities seem to have embraced the
militant tactics of Antifa, so much so that it seems like it’s already an
expectation that every alt-right rally will turn into a violent battlefield.
Yet I can’t help but wonder if these tactics are giving the alt-right exactly
what they want. Is it possible that we could be winning small battles while
losing the war? Is it possible that as we celebrate Nazis getting pun ched,
their numbers are growing as a direct result of it? I don’t pretend to have all
the answers. I would even admit that a portion of the blame for the rise in
violence has to go to those of us committed to nonviolence for our failure to
come up with the type of assertive response necessary in these urgent times.

Court Rejects Pipeline Rubber-Stamp, Orders Climate Impact Review

By Phil McKenna for Inside Climate News - An appeals court rejected federal
regulators' approval of a $3.5 billion natural gas pipeline project on Tuesday
over the issue of climate change. The United States Court of Appeals for the
District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission (FERC) failed to fully consider the impact of greenhouse gas
emissions from burning the fuel that would flow through the Southeast Market
Pipelines Project when the commission approved the project in 2016. "FERC's
environmental impact statement did not contain enough information on the
greenhouse gas emissions that will result from burning the gas that the
pipelines will carry," the judges wrote in a divided decision. "FERC must
either quantify and consider the project's downstream carbon emissions or
explain in more detail why it cannot do so." The 2-1 ruling ordered the
commission to redo its environmental review for the project, which includes the
approximately 500-mile Sab al Trail pipeline and two shorter, adjoining
pipelines. With its first phase complete, the project is already pumping
fracked gas from the Marcellus-Utica shale basins of Ohio, Pennsylvania and
West Virginia through Alabama, Georgia and Florida. -more-

By Staff of Tele Sur - Oberlin City Council members met Monday following a
public discussion with town residents and voted unanimously to replace the
controversial holiday. The small Ohioan city of Oberlin has decided to no
longer celebrate Columbus Day, replacing it instead with Indigenous Peoples
Day, out of respect for its Indigenous population. City Council members met
Monday following a public discussion with town residents and voted unanimously
to remove the controversial holiday, which celebrates Christopher Columbus’
arrival to the Americas in 1492 and his subsequent colonization of the region.
“Christopher Columbus was an agent of and continues to be a symbol of the
genocide of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas,” said Elissa Washuta, who
attended a demonstration Saturday together with around 100 protesters demanding
the removal of the statue of Christopher Columbus, the Columbus Dispatch
reported. Oberlin councilwoman Sharon Pearson defended the move, employing th e
words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “It’s never too late to do the right
thing,” she quoted, according to the Morning Journal. “And I think that it is
time for us as a community to take the words of our indigenous people and do
the right thing.” -more-

Could Dozens Of Shuttered Catholic Churches Become Immigrant Sanctuaries?

By Emma Whitford for Gothamist - Roman Catholic activists are calling on the
Archdiocese of New York to take a stronger stance against deportation. While
dozens of churches, mosques and synagogues across the city are opening their
doors to immigrants, providing everything from know-your-rights training to
physical sanctuary from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, they say Cardinal
Timothy Dolan isn't doing his share. Some are calling on Dolan to explicitly
denounce deportation, while others see an opportunity in the dozens of empty
churches across Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx: buildings that have
stood empty since August 2015, when the Archdiocese consolidated parishes as
part of a sweeping plan to save on maintenance costs, particularly in parishes
with dwindling attendance. Roughly 40 NYC churches have been merged into a
neighboring parish since the consolidations, according to the archdiocese; 24
of them are closed for worship. The archdiocese, which also includes cou nties
north of the city, shrank by 20 percent in one year. Felix Cepeda, an advocate
for immigration rights and church reform, told Gothamist that the recent uptick
in immigration enforcement across the country has inspired him. -more-

Archdiocese Defends Work With Immigrants In Response To Hunger Strike

By Camille Padilla Dalmau for Voices of NY - After activist Félix Cepeda
staged a hunger strike denouncing the Catholic Church for not opening its New
York houses of worship as “sanctuaries” for immigrants, Executive Director of
Catholic Charities Kevin Sullivan responded that the Archdiocese’s parishes,
schools and organizations have welcomed immigrants to the Big Apple for more
than 200 years. Last Friday, Cepeda conducted a 24-hour hunger strike in front
of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, and this Tuesday he repeated his
fast, this time outside Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s house. “Catholic Charities has
been at the forefront of this welcoming – protecting and integrating immigrants
and refugees in their new homes. The regrettable and inacceptable rhetoric and
actions of the past months have compelled Catholic Charities to intensify its
efforts to ensure that immigrants and refugees get the support, guidance and
protection that they need now more than ever,” sa id Sullivan. The monsignor
added that the services they provide include legal representation, English
classes, job safety training and information on civil rights, as well as help
funding proper documents. -more-

Noam Chomsky: AntiFa Is 'A Major Gift To The Right'

By Maya Oppenheim for The Independent. Noam Chomsky has criticised the
anti-fascist movement and argued its actions are wrong in principle and it is a
“major gift to the right”. The eminent intellectual, who is described as the
father of modern linguistics, argued the movement was self-destructive and
constituted a tiny faction on the periphery of the left. Antifa, shorthand for
anti-fascist organisations, refers to a loose coalition of militant,
decentralised, grassroots groups which are opposed to the far-right. The
movement, which was founded in Europe in the 1920s, has dominated headlines in
the wake of a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville earlier this month.
Neo-Nazis, KKK members and “alt-right” supporters clashed with anti-fascists
and a woman was left dead after a car ploughed into a crowd of anti-fascist
protesters. -more-

Arizona Unconstitutionally Banned Mexican-American Studies Classes

By Roque Planas for The Huffington Post. PHOENIX ― A federal judge ruled
Tuesday that the state of Arizona violated students’ rights by banning a
Mexican-American studies program from Tucson public schools. The ruling issued
by U.S. District Judge A. Wallace Tashima found that a law passed by Arizona’s
Republican-dominated state legislature in 2010 violated both the First and 14th
Amendments. It marks a major victory for educators and activists who viewed the
ethnic studies law as a flatly discriminatory effort by Arizona Republicans to
keep Hispanic students from learning about their history or studying writers of
color that are often ignored in public schools. Curtis Acosta, one of the
former teachers of the banned program, celebrated the ruling on Twitter. -more-

Police Tear-Gas Demonstrators At Huge Anti-Trump Protest

By Julia Conley for Common Dreams - Contrary to Trump's claims that protests
were small, many thousands showed up to peacefully condemn the president.
Tensions soared and police ultimately dispersed crowds with tear gas at the
huge anti-Trump protest outside the Phoenix Convention Center on Tuesday night,
where Trump was inside raging about the news media's coverage of his
administration and dog-whistling his defense of white supremacy at a
campaign-style rally. Contrary to Trump's lie that only a few protesters were
outside, many thousands of people had shown up to demonstrate peacefully and
condemn the president's rhetoric and agenda. Mayor Greg Stanton said officials
would examine whether excessive force was used by the city's police. The police
said they only responded with force after protesters threw water bottles and
other objects at them, an account that was disputed by witnesses. The Los
Angeles Times along with several demonstrators reported that officers first
fired tear g as after protesters tried to move police barricades as the
president finished speaking. -more-

& The Spanish Civil War
<https://popularresistance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2017/08/1uf-e1503580162158-150x150.jpg>
By David Rovics in Songwriter's Notebook. The Spanish Civil War has been
discussed in the media more in the past few weeks than I can remember in my
lifetime. The media has said more nice things about anarchists in the past few
weeks than ever in my lifetime as well, and I'm pretty sure they have covered
protests more lately than at any time since 1970 or so. At the beginning of the
month I wrote a song, "Rojava," after getting encrypted messages from the front
lines of the war against Islamic State in Syria, sent by an anarchist from the
US who is there fighting with the YPG. Which is the male version of the YPJ,
which together makes up the biggest chunk of the military wing of the struggle
for the freedom of the people of the region known as Rojava. -more-

Fork In The National Road: A New Progressive Supermajority Party Is Forming

By Gail McGowan Mellor for The Huffington Post - The time is ripe. The
Democratic and Republican parties, private political clubs, are not mentioned
in the U.S. Constitution and do not represent the people who elect them, yet
have a stranglehold on our electoral system. People are fed up. Hemorrhaging
voters, the Dems and Reps are each down to around a fourth of the voters,
already minority parties. Progressives — those who support minimum wage, social
justice, strong environmental protection, 21st century infrastructure and
universal healthcare and oppose corruption, invasive wars and corporate welfare
— are meanwhile 66%, two-thirds of voters, the U.S. supermajority. We as a
people therefore stand at a fork in the national road. The country’s
Progressive supermajority could sweep every local, state and federal election
if it united. Should we come together in the old Democratic Party or form a new
one? The Democratic Party is in many states hollow below the federal level. Sen
ator Bernie Sanders and a contingent of young Progressives have therefore been
trying for a year to fill those levels with clean candidates, with some success
but only to be repeatedly kneecapped by the party’s corrupt, deeply entrenched
Neoliberal leadership. -more-
