I have a sense of it, after four years of Donald Trump's trashing our
democracy as socialism/Marxism, and winking as confused angry people stormed
the White House.
And at the same time, we appear to need to set up straw men on which
to vent our rage. It wasn't so long ago that some folks began
calling French Frries, Freedom Fries. There are dozens of examples, but one
that has stuck with me for 80 years is the way American women went through
their knic knacs breaking all those items made in Japan. Since even as a
small boy I could see the silliness in this, taking something that you
already paid for, and breaking it up to teach the Japanese a lesson. On
