FYI about an application to the Human Rights Commission about issues people
with disabilities are having with public transport.

Hi everyone,

I have attached the latest on the temporary exemption application from the
Transport Standards by the Australasian Railways Association (ARA).

The previous temporary exemption expired yesterday 30 June. The Australian
Human Rights Commission (AHRC) have granted a further six months (to 31
December 2014) exemption on the same terms as the previous exemptions.

Between now and the end of the year, the AHRC should release all the necessary
information, arrange public consultations an call for submissions on what is
called the "Primary Application". The Primary Application is what the ARA
really wants to get through, which is all the exemptions it has currently plus
a whole lot more. Almost no information has so far been released, so it's hard
to know for sure exactly what will be in the Primary Application.

It will be important for us to look at this closely when it does become
available and advocate very strongly for a fair outcome that does not diminish
the human rights of people with disabilities who wish to use public transport,
in this case trains, in all states of Australia.
