The WFDB is hoping to introduce it on an international basis. I have spoken to
a number of Deafblind People here in Sydney and they think it would be a good
idea. Only Japan was agaist it they it wouls make people more vunerable. It is
on the agenda for Wfdb at the moment.

Meredith here.
Paul Garwood the Orientation and Mobility specialist at Senses Australia did a
lot of work regarding the red and white cane a few years ago.
I emailed Paul and here’s what he said:
“the Red/White cane is not a new thing it’s been around a long time, but not
internationally. The countries which it is recognised appear to be strong
advocates for the deafblind population and have adopted the cane, but due to so
many changes over the past few years such as the introduction of coloured canes
and to a certain extent difficulty in even getting the white cane recognised
has had some impact on the original suggestion”
I’ve cced Paul in on this conversation given his extensive experience with this
topic and his previous work on trying to engage the Australian deafblind
community to work with him on this.

Hi Everyone
At the WFDB conference in June. One of the issues that came up at the GA was a
Red And White cane which would show that a person is Deafblind. I am trying to
find out what Deafblind People think about this. Attached is a description of
the cane. Please let me know what you think. Would you like to use this or not?
Wfdb are trying to get it reconised all over the World.
