We had water coming up through the cellar floor in our last house on Jarrow
Road, off Sharrowvale road. There we had a primitive tanking done, with
plastic membranes with a concrete floor and the sides built up with breeze
block. It kept the water out but the air was always damp. It also reduced
the size of the cellar quite a bit.
Here on Everton Road, the previous owner did a simple floor membrane with a
(badly done) DIY concrete floor, which did keep water from rising, but the
walls were sometimes damp and the air was very humid.
Since then we have had a much more sophisticated tanking done with a
thicker German profiled plastic (to provide channels for water to go down)
carefully taped and sealed, with channels leading back to a small tank with
a pump. This is really high quality (but also was expensive) and was done
by Andy Money from Rossington Road. He also dug deeper into the bedrock to
retain the height, and installed lots of insulation and a toilet cubicle.
This makes for a fully usable (and warm) extra room, though doesn't fully
get rid of air humidity (we've got the washing machine & a sink there, so
occasional airing out is needed). No problems with damp on walls though.
Had mostly written this when Nick responded - as he points out, the only
way to a really dry cellar is full tanking. We also noted that if other
people tanked their cellars around us, we got more water finding its way
through ours.

Dear ECCO members
In the last month or so my cellar floor has become wet (40 Everton) after
30 years of being just very slightly damp. I have had a number
of inspections, including Yorkshire Water to check for leaks, and they are
all saying it is because the water table is rising due to the increase in
rainfall over the last few years. I can either put up with a wet cellar or
have it 'tanked' at considerable cost.
Is anyone else having the same experience?
Also has anyone had their cellar tanked or waterproofed and if so by whom?
Any experiences, tips, warnings or reassurances would be very welcome.
