Dear Listers,

I hope you are enjoying these last lazy, hazy days of summer.

Last year, I had 8 seniors, 2 juniors and 7 sophomores who had the right to
use "a tape". This was in addition to the students with oral exams. My
school's double tape cassette player had already followed mine to the boom
box graveyard and I was at a loss at quiz and test time.

My son suggested that as a stopgap, I Bluetooth the text and questions to
them right before the test. Although this wasn't a perfect solution, since
you can't go back and forth, it allowed them to hear the text and the
questions.

Scenario: The "tape kids" come to class 3 minutes earlier, place their
phones on my desk in Bluetooth mode, and sit down. As soon as the rest of
the class had files in, I begin the transmission. None of the other
students have their phones out and any other classes taking the same exam
take it at the same time.

I agree with Adele that exams should be given and taken under Bagrut
conditions and I made sure that for the Matkonot the students had tapes.
They had already practiced using old matric tapes (pre-module) and a few
module tapes. Although it would be easier to use old module exams, we never
give matric exams as Matkonot. It was very difficult making 10 tapes for
each Matkonet, especially if the student was doing more than one module.
Luckily, our 10th graders don't take matric exams.

If anyone has a better solution, please let me know. September is around
the corner and my sophs are now juniors and I just bet the "powers that be"
are already hard at work on the test schedule.

Query: Does any of this apply if we haven't received remuneration for the
work we did with LD kids last year? Are we standing together or feeling bad
for the kids and giving in once again?

Awaiting your wise responses!

Candella Schorer
