Dear Striking Teachers, I fell in love with teaching many years ago - and it has really taken this present impasse to make me totally fall in love with my colleagues : my striking fellow teachers. Teachers are so optimistic, so brave, so selfless and so kind. The impetus that is carrying this strike - is not the very badly organized (in my opinion) Irgun but the belief and passion of the teachers. I know colleagues who say they are hungry - the cupboards are bare. I know colleagues who are struggling to repay mortgages. But, all of them believe that we must continue and we cannot fold. I have been really depressed and despondent and as many of you have said, the way out of this is to go and stand with your colleagues at a junction and feel the huge support around you. I have started standing outside my school at 7 every morning with placards. At first there were a handful of teachers and now we have at least 20 teachers and we have been joined now by the pupils and today and yesterday our Principal came to stand with us. The hooting and noise of the passing cars lifts one's spirits. When one has bus driver after bus driver raising their fists and supporting the struggle along with so much of the public you leave feeling that you cannot falter now. The teachers' optimism, self-belief and noble cause are what is driving this strike now - let us continue.
