The official name of this grade is a "tziyun shnati". Its purpose is not only to protect the pupil from getting a grade solely based on his/her performance on an hour and a quarter exam. The so-called magen takes into account course work and attitude and can raise a pupil's mark if that pupil did all the required assignments and came to lessons over a given period. If, on the other hand, the pupil did not fulfill the requirements of the course then his/her grade will be affected detrimentally by the "tziyun shnati" which is fair enough. It means that teachers have some clout in 11th and 12th grade classes. In English, this is especially important as kids think that all they have to do to succeed in the Bagrut is to turn up with a dictionary and do an unseen, as the exam is basically a pop quiz. I hope this helps. Could someone please explain it to me once and for all? "Magen," to my feeble mind, means protection. How does the magen protect the student? To me is just seams like part A of a 2-part bagrut exam, Part A being called "Magen" and Part B "bagrut" with the final mark the average. If she gets 60 in the magen, and 100 in the bagrut, she ends up with 80 (if I understand correctly). This is no help!!!! And v.v.? I am sure I am missing SOMETHING! Please help... I need peace of mind!
